Glassboro does not run a set bulk day the way some neighboring towns do. Glassboro bulk trash pickup works on a simpler rule: if you are going to have bulk items or an unusual amount out for trash, you tell the Highway Office first. Skip the phone call and there is a decent chance the pile is still there when you get home.
Here is how it works, based on the borough’s own recycling guide and solid waste ordinance, and where it stops being enough.
The Basic Rule: Call Before You Put It Out
Trash and recycling are collected once a week in Glassboro, on the same day. For anything beyond a normal week’s trash, the borough asks residents to notify the Highway Office. The office number is 856-881-8422.
That call matters most for:
- Furniture and other bulk items.
- Carpet. It has to be cut into 4- to 6-foot lengths, rolled and tied, and the borough says you must call for a bulk pickup.
- Unusual amounts. A garage’s worth of bags is not a normal week, even if every bag is ordinary trash.
The Limits That Trip People Up
50 pounds
The borough ordinance says heavy units over 50 pounds gross weight are not acceptable for collection. That applies to containers, and the borough’s guide applies the same number to metal: metal objects cannot weigh more than 50 pounds or run longer than 6 feet.
Five containers of do-it-yourself debris
If you did the work yourself, Glassboro will take a limited amount of construction debris from a residence: up to five 30-gallon containers a week, none over 50 pounds. That covers a bathroom vanity swap. It does not cover a kitchen.
Nothing a contractor generated
If a contractor or subcontractor did the work, the debris is not the borough’s problem. The guide spells it out: no contractor’s debris, including wood, carpeting, roofing shingles, demolition or remodeling material.
Curb timing
Trash goes out no earlier than 3:00pm the day before collection. It has to be at the curb by 7:00am from Labor Day to Memorial Day, and by 6:00am in the summer. Containers come back in by 9:00pm on collection day. The ordinance allows fines of up to $2,000 for violations.
Appliances and Metal
Appliances and scrap metal are part of Glassboro’s required recycling. Doors have to come off appliances before they go to the curb, and the 50-pound and 6-foot limits above apply to loose metal. Call the Highway Office to arrange it.
The One Thing Glassboro Makes Easy: Electronics
Most New Jersey towns make you drive TVs and computers to a drop-off. Glassboro is an exception. Televisions, monitors, computers, copiers and printers must be recycled, and the borough collects them at the curb on your normal trash day. The county’s listing for Glassboro says there is no need to call.
That is a real convenience, and worth using.
What the Borough Does Not Take
- Contractor debris of any kind.
- Anything over 50 pounds as a single unit.
- Hazardous waste and oil-based paint. These go to Gloucester County’s household special waste days, held a few times a year at the county Solid Waste Complex in South Harrison Township and the County Roads Department in Clayton.
- Motor oil and car batteries at the curb. Residents can bring them to the Highway Department at 125 Grove Street, Monday to Friday, 7:00am to 2:00pm.
The Rowan Factor: Move-Outs and Rentals
With Rowan University in town, Glassboro has a lot of rental turnover, and the calendar is brutal. Leases end, students leave, and landlords have days, not weeks, to turn a house. That is the situation the borough’s rules fit worst: a full house of furniture and mattresses, all over 50 pounds, all at once, with a new tenant arriving.
If that is you, read property cleanouts for landlords and realtors in South Jersey. One crew visit between tenants is usually cheaper than a week of lost rent.
When to Use the Borough and When to Call a Crew
Use the borough when you have a few items, none of them heavy, you can get them to the curb yourself, and you are not on a deadline. Call the Highway Office, put it out the afternoon before, done.
Call a crew when:
- The items are heavy. Sleeper sofas, solid dressers, treadmills and old tube TVs usually run well over 50 pounds.
- A contractor did the work, or you tore out more than five containers’ worth yourself.
- It is a whole floor or a whole house. See residential cleanouts, or estate cleanouts in Gloucester County if you are settling a family home.
- It is in a basement or attic and you cannot carry it out.
- There is a date attached: a closing, a lease start, a listing photo shoot.

Glassboro Bulk Trash FAQs
Does Glassboro NJ have bulk trash pickup?
Yes, but not on a fixed bulk day. Residents are asked to notify the Glassboro Highway Office at 856-881-8422 before putting out bulk items or unusual amounts of trash. Carpet must be cut into 4- to 6-foot lengths, rolled and tied.
What is the weight limit for trash in Glassboro?
Glassboro’s ordinance says units over 50 pounds gross weight are not acceptable for collection. Metal objects are limited to 50 pounds or 6 feet in length.
Will Glassboro take construction debris?
Only a small amount from do-it-yourself work: up to five 30-gallon containers per week, each under 50 pounds. Debris from work done by a contractor, including wood, carpeting, roofing shingles and remodeling material, is not collected.
How do I get rid of a TV in Glassboro?
Glassboro collects televisions, monitors, computers, copiers and printers at the curb on your normal trash day. They must be recycled and cannot go in the trash cart.
How do landlords handle a full move-out in Glassboro?
A full rental turnover usually exceeds what the borough will collect, because of the 50-pound limit and the volume. Most landlords use a private cleanout crew so the house is empty in one visit before the next lease starts.
