If you have a truck bed full of junk and you are wondering where to dump trash in Gloucester County, NJ, the honest answer is that there is one main place, it is not open on most weekends, and it will turn you around at the gate if you show up in the wrong vehicle.
Here is the full picture: the county landfill, what it costs in 2026, the rules for homeowners, and the smaller town drop-offs that handle the things the landfill is the wrong place for. Fees and hours below come from the Gloucester County Improvement Authority’s published schedules.
The Main One: Gloucester County Solid Waste Complex
The county’s landfill is the Gloucester County Solid Waste Complex at 493 Monroeville Road (Route 694) in South Harrison Township. The main number is 856-478-6045.
- Weekdays: Monday to Friday, 7:00am to 3:30pm.
- Saturdays: only on selected dates, 8:00am to 1:00pm, and only for convenience center customers. The last Saturday on the 2026 list is November 7.
That Saturday schedule is the first surprise. It is roughly one Saturday a month from March through November, and nothing in winter. If you work weekdays, plan around it or take a morning off.
Who Is Allowed to Dump There
The county lets homeowners haul their own household waste without a solid waste transporter registration, but only if all three of these are true:
- The waste came from your own primary residence.
- The vehicle has a passenger registration, or is a non-commercial pickup or SUV.
- The vehicle is under 9,000 pounds gross weight, or under 16,000 pounds combined with a trailer.
And these get turned away unless they are registered with NJDEP as a waste transporter:
- Commercial vehicles and farm vehicles
- Rental trucks, including U-Haul and Home Depot rentals
- Any vehicle with business markings
That rental truck rule catches a lot of people. Renting a box truck for the day to clear out a house and run it to the landfill is the obvious plan, and it does not work here. Convenience center customers also have to unload by hand. Dump trailers are not permitted.
What It Costs in 2026
You pay by weight, with a minimum charge per visit. The tipping fees effective January 1, 2026:
- Household trash (Type 10): $89 per ton, $22 minimum.
- Bulky waste such as furniture (Type 13): $75 per ton, $19 minimum.
- Construction and demolition debris (Type 13C): $75 per ton, $19 minimum.
- Yard and vegetative waste (Type 23): $92 per ton, $23 minimum.
- Large appliance: $30.
A pickup bed of furniture and bags will usually land near the minimum. A bed of plaster, tile or shingles will not. Heavy material is where landfill trips get expensive, because you are paying for every pound. The county takes payment online and by phone; ask about payment at the scale house when you call.
Hazardous Waste: Not at the Landfill Gate
Paint thinner, pesticides, pool chemicals, gasoline, propane tanks, oil-based paint, motor oil, antifreeze, fluorescent tubes and rechargeable batteries do not go in with regular loads. Gloucester County runs free household special waste collection days for residents, 8:00am to 2:00pm, at two locations: the Solid Waste Complex and the County Roads Department at 1200 N. Delsea Drive in Clayton. Businesses are not eligible.
The 2026 dates have passed, so check the county calendar for the spring schedule. Not accepted at those events: latex paint, asbestos, medical waste, smoke detectors, explosives and ammunition.
Town Drop-Offs Worth Knowing
For electronics and smaller loads, your own municipality is often closer and free. A few we get asked about most:
- Monroe Township (Williamstown): Public Works drop-off, Wednesdays 8:00am to 2:00pm and Saturdays 8:00am to noon. Computers, car batteries, brush, appliances, household trash and yard debris. 856-728-9844. More in our Williamstown bulk pickup guide.
- Washington Township (Sewell, Turnersville): electronics drop-off on McClure Drive across from the police station, Saturdays 8:00am to 2:00pm, residents only. 856-589-0523.
- Deptford: electronics drop-off at Public Works, 1702 Hurffville Road, 7:30am to 3:00pm. 856-228-4719.
- Glassboro: motor oil and car batteries at the Highway Department, 125 Grove Street, weekdays 7:00am to 2:00pm. Electronics are collected curbside. See our Glassboro bulk trash guide.
These are for residents of that town. Bring ID, and call first, because hours and accepted items change.
Dump Run or Crew? The Real Comparison
A landfill run makes sense when you own a pickup, the load is light and bulky, you can get there on a weekday, and you do not mind loading it twice: once into the truck and once out of it by hand.
It stops making sense when:
- You would need to rent a truck. Rentals are not allowed in without a transporter registration.
- It is more than one load. The complex sits at the southwestern edge of the county. From Williamstown, Washington Township or Deptford it is a long round trip, per load, before 3:30pm.
- The load is heavy. Weight-based fees plus fuel plus your day adds up quickly.
- Everything is still in the basement. The landfill does not help with the stairs.
We run the numbers both ways in DIY junk removal vs. hiring a crew, and how junk removal pricing works explains what you are paying for when you hire out. Short version: our price includes the labor, the truck and the tipping fee.
